Situated in the southwestern tip of Crete, 75 km from the city, is Elafonisi, an area of outstanding natural beauty which is protected by the network Natura 2000. What stands out at Elafonisi are its turquoise waters and pink sand which got its color from the countless shells crushed here over the centuries.
On the way you to Elafonissi you will come across the monastery Chryssoskalitissa, built up on a big rock. It is well worth a visit and to seek the golden stair according to tradition which only true believers can distinguish.
Every summer Elafonisi receives thousands of visitors every day. If you want to fully enjoy the beauty of Elafonissi it is best to go at the end of June or at the end of August. The surrounding area offers accommodation and taverns.
